Geneva Day School Earns Recertification as a Maryland Green School Once Again!

Geneva Day School is proud to announce that the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) has recertified Geneva as a 2018 Maryland Green School, part of a national and international community of sustainable green schools. This is Geneva Day School’s second recertification and third green school certification overall. Our staff, students, and their families are becoming better stewards of our Earth’s resources and developing a better understanding of their own local environment.

Over the past four years, Geneva Day School has demonstrated and documented a continuous effort to integrate sustainable environmental management practices, environmental education curriculum, professional development opportunities, and community engagement to enhance and extend our green school practices. This award signifies that our school is making a commitment to fostering stewardship of the Earth and reducing Geneva’s environmental impact. Our students, ages two through six, study insects, create and restore habitats, learn about local wildlife, plus weather, energy and water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, and much more. Teachers use the school’s grounds as an extension of our classrooms and have students spend more time outdoors, which is fundamental for connecting with nature. In addition to ongoing environmental education activities, Geneva Day School also includes three all-school environmental celebrations annually¾Harvest Days in October, Earth Days in April and Field Days in May.

The Maryland Green Schools program encourages educational opportunities for preschool through grade 12 schools that increase awareness and understanding of environmental relationships that impact public health and the local community. The program is aligned with Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement 2014 goals and supports Maryland State Department of Education graduation requirements and standards. Geneva Day School is one of 618 active Maryland Green Schools, over 27% of all Maryland schools, a 2% growth from 2017.

Geneva Day School will participate in the Annual Maryland Green School Youth Summit on May 31, 2018, at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis and receive its award then.
